Care
During the winter, do not water the bulbs. The soil must be cool but not excessively wet. When they bloom, water only once a week but avoid wetting the flowers. If you intend to plant the same bulb the following year, remove it from the ground during the summer and store it wrapped in paper in a cool, dry place.
Pay attention, however, that hyacinths like cold climates, so in the Center and South regions of Portugal it is very difficult for the same bulb to bloom a second time. In the North, on the contrary, it is possible to remove the bulb from the ground, cut the ends and store in a dry, cool and airy place until the following autumn.
Selection: Single or in groups, you should always choose healthy bulbs
Location: Hyacinths are well in front of the bulbs or at home
Propagation
Quality bulbs produce “children” near the base of older bulbs, which separate at the end of summer, while the plant is not yet active. If you want to stimulate the birth of these smaller bulbs, make an incision in the shape of a cross in the older bulb, before saving it for the annual rest. However, these smaller bulbs only produce flowers after two or three years.

Forcing bulbs
It is a method that allows you to obtain flowers more quickly, although it weakens the plant in such a way that it will not flower again.
Place the bulb in a vase of water so that the bulb rests on the base and touches the water without being too submerged. For about eight to 10 weeks keep the jar covered with brown paper in a dark, not too hot cupboard. Weekly, remove the cartridge and add warm water to replace what has evaporated in the meantime. When the leaf shoots are about two inches long, remove the paper covering and place the jar on a windowsill. At this stage, you should continue to add warm water. In a short time, the bulb will bloom.
Alternatively, you can plant four or five bulbs in a wide pot 12 centimeters deep. Do not fully bury the bulbs. Cover with paper and place in the fridge at a temperature not exceeding 9°C for 10 to 12 weeks, until the plant forms a good root network. As soon as the outside temperature rises, move the pots to a cool, dark place until a strong shoot forms from which the leaves will emerge. When it reaches 5 cm, place the jar on a windowsill. You can plant the bulbs in the garden, but flowering takes a few years.
