Water lilies (or, in French : Nymphaea ) is a series of approximately 250 oil paintings by the French Impressionist painter Claude Monet (1840-1926). These paintings representment's flower garden at Giverny and were the main focus of Monet's artistic output for the last thirty years of his life. Many of the works were painted when Monet was already suffering from cataracts .

Monet's continuous and prolonged preference for the creation and exhibition of paintings related to the subject began in 1895, with the following important facts related to the series Os' Nenuphars ː

May 1895: Monet begins painting the Water Lilies .


November 1901: in Giverny, the artist diverts the Epee so that the water from the river can feed his needs and water his exotic plants.


1902: De facto beginning of the series Os' Nanoflares .


1906: The Water Lilies series progresses slowly. Monet remodeled many paintings, having even destroyed several and postponed the exhibition of the series.


May 6 - June 5, 1909: Gallerist Paul Durand-Ruel exhibits forty-eight paintings of Water Lilies .


1910: Enlargement of Lake Nenuphars.


July 1912: Monet is diagnosed with cataracts .


1914: Encouraged by Georges Clemenceau , Monet starts a series of decorative canvases with water lilies as their theme .


April 12, 1922: Monet signs in Vernon (Eura), before a notary , a declaration of donation in which he undertakes to deliver the panels of Water Lilies to the French State in April 1924. Almost blind and eager to complete the panels, he undergoes surgery to the eyes.


February 1924: Durand-Ruel exhibits several recent water lilies in New York.


1924: Clemenceau postpones delivering the panels because of Monet's poor eyesight.


December 5, 1926: The painter dies at the age of 86 in Giverny.


May 17, 1927: official opening of the Water Lilies exhibition at the Orangery Museum .

When he started the Water Lilies series , Monet had already been working since 1889 on series of paintings on the same theme in which only the light varies. Thus, he produced ten paintings on the Ceruse Valley , exhibited at Galerie Georges Petit, the Haystacks series, the Rouen Cathedral series and the paintings at the Gare de Saint-Lazare .

It was during the time of Georges Clemenceau that Claude Monet decided to install a large mural set in the Orangeries of the Jardin des Tuileries . He worked there from 1914, but for eight years the project was the subject of tough negotiations with public authorities in which Clemenceau played a decisive role.

During the 1920s, the French state built two oval rooms for the permanent exhibition of Monet's eight water lily pond paintings. These eight compositions have the same height (2 meters), but variable length (from 5.99 to 17.00 meters), covering the walls. The set forms an area of ​​around 200 m which makes it one of the most monumental achievements of the 20th century. Monet painted these compositions so that they were suspended in a circle, as if a day or the four seasons passed before the spectators' vision.

The exhibition opened to the public on May 16, 1927, a few months after Monet's death. Sixty of Monet's water lilies paintings from around the world were put together in a special exhibition at the Muse de orangeries in 1999.

On 19 June 2007, one of the water lilies sold for £18.5 million at Sotheby's London auction . On 24 June 2008 , another of Monet 's Water Lilies , sold for nearly £41 million at Christie 's , London .

In May 2010, it was announced that the 1906 Water Lilies would be up for auction in London the following June, with an estimated asking price of between £30 and £40 million. Giovanna Borazon, Director of Auctions and Head of Impressionism and Modern Art at Christie's , stated that "Claude Monet's Water Lilies paintings are among the most recognized and celebrated works of the 20th century and were hugely influential on many of the following generations of artists." The auction took place on June 23, 2010, with bids up to £29 million, which ended up not being sold.
