DAHLIA: MEXICAN EXUBERANCE
“Discovered” in Mexico in the 16th century and spread across Europe in the 18th century, dahlias are one of the most striking ornamental plants in gardens.
Dahlia is a genus of medium-sized perennial herb, originating in Mexico, belonging to the Asteraceae family. The first reports about these plants date back to 1525 and were made by the Spaniards reporting their presence in Mexico. However, the first known description of this type dates back to 1570, when King Philip II of Spain and I of Portugal (1527-1598) commissioned his physician, Francisco Hernández, to visit Mexico in order to study natural products. of that country. Used and cultivated by the natives in their country of origin as a source of food and medicine, this plant was brought to Europe by the Spaniards at the end of the Enlightenment, in an attempt to introduce its tubers, very similar to those of the sweet potato, into the European food culture. An attempt that was not successful. However,
At the end of the 18th century, during a visit to Mexico, the director of the Botanical Garden of Madrid, Abade Cavanilles, was enchanted by this plant and its flowers. And it was precisely Cavanilles who made a dahlia bloom for the first time in Europe, after Vicente Cervantes, director of the Botanical Garden of Mexico City, sent him several “parts of plants”. The first plant to flower, in 1789, Cavanilles named Dahlia pinnata; to the second, which bloomed the following year, that of Dahlia rosea; and the third, which flourished only in 1796, that of Dahlia coccinea. It is believed that the genus name Dahlia was a way for Cavanilles to pay homage to his friend and noted botanist Anders Dahl.
The year 1798 marks the beginning of the spread of Dahlia throughout Europe, when in Cavanilles it begins to send tubers to personalities, scholars and institutions of various nationalities, notably the University of Montpelier and the Botanical Garden of London (Kew Gardens) and from France (Jardin des Plantes). There are currently 42 accepted dahlia species and over 57,000 registered cultivars, according to the Royal Horticultural Society (RHS). The dahlia is an ornamental plant, easy to maintain, which produces very fragrant flowers. Depending on the species and/or variety, it assumes different heights, shapes, colors and flowering times. We challenge you now to learn a little more about the different types of dahlias, how to cultivate them and what main maintenance care they require.

Curiosities
Due to the morphology of their stems, dahlias were known to the Aztecs as acocotli and coco xochitl, words meaning tubes or water pipes. The flower of the dahlias is, in fact, a group of small flowers arranged under a disk-shaped surface, that is, an inflorescence botanically designated as capitulum. It should also be noted that the petal-like structures that cover the inflorescences of dahlias and other related species are called ligules.
KNOW HOW TO GROW THEM AND WHAT MAIN MAINTENANCE CARE THEY REQUIRE...
Dahlias are very versatile plants, they can be planted in flower beds or in pots, in gardens, or as cut flowers indoors.
1. They are plants that need their own space, they do not do very well when accompanied by other herbaceous species.
2. Full sun is recommended, especially if you want to leave the tubers in the ground during the cold season. Good watering conditions, soil always moist, but not waterlogged. It needs to be protected from the winds.
3. The earth opening should be about 30 cm wide and deep, and the recommended planting spacing between tubers is about 40 cm.
4. Despite being plants that are easy to maintain, it is important not to forget that they are delicate and therefore must be protected from the cold. Its planting should be during the spring (March to May).
5. They prefer moist soils, as long as they are well drained, they do not tolerate waterlogging. They need regular watering during the dry season.
6.Cutting flowers regularly encourages the plant to produce new flowers, so don't be afraid to cut them and use them to decorate your home's interior as well.
7. Regular pruning helps keep the plant healthy.
8. Due to their difference in height, some dahlias may need more support than others, so as not to topple over, and it may be necessary to resort to tutors.
