Camellia: planting, cultivation and care

What is the plant that can claim to be the source of the most consumed drink in the world? The camellia, of course! It was the Camellia sinensis species that gave us tea!

Reducing this beautiful shrub to just infused leaves would be a mistake; its flowers, not always fragrant, but always spectacular, attest to this.

Camellia presentation

Born in Asia, the camellia is a shrub of the Théaceae family with alternating and satin leaves. Depending on the species, camellia flowers bloom from fall to spring.
Lover of sheltered places, mild climates and slightly acidic soils, it has the particularity of hating drafts. Its most common species, the Japanese camellia ( Camellia japonica ), with evergreen foliage, has white, yellow, pink or red flowers with golden stamens.
It will have the most beautiful effect planted in groups of different varieties, or even in hedgerows in milder regions. massive, its flowering will work wonders with spring bulbs such as daffodils and well-cut ferns. The camellia can also be enjoyed in pots on the terrace.

Do you know that…? Is it because of the tragic influence of the “lady of the camellias”, the consumptive Marguerite Gautier who so appreciated the absence of the scent of this flower? In the language of flowers, offering camellias means "I'm dying of love for you"...

Species and varieties of camellias

Japanese lovers will fall in love with the many varieties of Camellia japonica . For example, at the end of winter, we can mention the passionate red of the 'Julius Verne' camellia, the virginal whiteness of the 'Snow White' and the simplicity of the 'Crimson King'.

In hybrid camellias williamsii (Camellia japonica x c.saluenensis ), which are more resistant to cold, ' Debbie ' will delight enthusiasts with its beautiful semi-double pink flowers.

From October onwards, the Camellia sasanqua species with lighter foliage takes over and delights us with its fragrant flowers. Here again, colors range from white to red, including pink.

camellia plantation

A slightly acidic and sheltered soil is ideal for the camellia, which is generally hardy at -12°C. Planting is done away from frost, in autumn or spring, digging a hole twice the size of the root ball and then adding in equal parts substrate for acidic plants and soil rich in humus. Water abundantly at the end of planting.
When planting camellia in a pot, don't neglect the layer of clay balls to allow for drainage. The steps are identical to planting in the ground.

Growing and caring for camellias

The camellia likes a lot of humidity. If you don't live in a humid region, you'll need to water as soon as it's warm or invest in drip irrigation. Mulching will also limit evaporation.
In pots, transplanting is recommended every 2 or 3 years to allow the camellia to flower in good conditions.
In winter, the camellia must be protected, as the roots are sensitive to the cold. To do this, surround the pots with bubble wrap or filter straw and cover the camellias in the garden with a thick layer of pine bark. Does not support snow in contact with its leaves; for this, shake off the branches or apply a winter veil.

Camellia pruning

Pruning the camellia is not necessary unless you want to give it a particular shape. In some white cultivars, rain turns the flowers brown after a downpour. Therefore, one can consider removing the flowers when they are spoiled. Fortunately, new cultivars have already started to solve this problem.
Pruning is done at the end of flowering, between February and April for Japanese camellias and for sasanqua camellias after heavy winter frosts.

Camellia diseases and parasites

If the foliage starts to turn yellow and falls off, there's no need to blame any pests: the cause is more likely to be too much limestone in the soil. This chlorosis can be controlled by adding acid plant soil and spraying with anti-chlorosis.

Regularly monitor the presence of “ash deposits'' on camellia leaves: this sooty fungus testifies to the presence of mealybugs. Prevent invasion by spraying the foliage with a black soap solution and pre-emptively watering with distilled water.
