How to grow poppies in a pot
These easy-to-grow flowers come in perennial and annual varieties. Once called a "cornfield weed," poppies are definitely not weeds. Although they grow as wildflowers in some regions, they are a popular choice among gardeners to add eye-catching color to rock gardens, large plantings and borders. Poppies grow to between 30 to 60 cm in height and are available in rainbow colors. These plants are a great choice for novice gardeners as they are very easy to grow whether in an outdoor garden or in pots. There are some basic steps to growing poppies.
Step 1
Fill your pot to within an inch of the rim with good potting soil. Poppies prefer good drainage, so mixing a little compost with your potting soil works well. Do not use garden mix, as this type of soil tends to retain water, making it heavy and compact.

Step 2
Sow the poppies directly on top of the potting soil mix. Seeds can be sown indoors in mid-August; sow outdoors after the last frost has passed, usually in late August or early September. Spread a light layer of potting soil mix over the seeds. Poppies prefer full sun exposure compared to partial shade; place your pots in an area that will receive full sunlight all day.
Step 3
Water to moisten the soil and be careful not to flood the pot and disturb the seeds. Use a watering can or spray bottle. Seedlings will appear after about four to six weeks.
Step 4
Use a general purpose fertilizer once or twice a month for the first growing season. After the first year of cultivation, fertilize only in early spring and again in the fall. A liquid fertilizer works well; water well after fertilizing.

Step 5
Water the poppies every other day once the plants are well established. Let the soil dry out between watering.
Step 6
Remove old flowers to encourage new growth. Flowers will appear between late spring and mid-summer. "Remove" simply means to cut off the old flowers.
