ALL About AMARILIS - How To CULTIVATE, PLANT And VARIOUS Species

Amaryllis is a bulbous plant like an onion. Inside this bulb it stores water and nutrients and this makes it a very resistant plant, which even tolerates being out of the ground during its dormant period.

Inside each bulb there is already the amount of flowers and leaves that the plant will have during its life cycle and during this period it will also be preparing little puppies that are the bulbs that are connected to the mother bulb. We should only remove the bulbils when they are already bigger and already forming leaves. Each bulbil reaches maturity and starts producing flowers from the 3rd year onwards, but this is an average, this can vary. The husks outside the bulb act as protection, so it's not necessary to remove them.

Amaryllis is a plant native to the Americas and can be grown throughout Brazil.

The amaryllis goes into dormancy after its flowering period, which means that it loses its flowers, leaves and the bulb is quiet... and after a few months, in its restful sleep, it starts sprouting and flowering again. So never throw away your amaryllis thinking it's dead, because it could be dormant.

Even the biggest doubt people have is when the plant is dormant, whether they need to remove the bulb from the ground or not.

And the answer is that it's optional... As it has all the nutrients stored inside the bulb, it can stay out of the ground.

Some people say that if we remove the bulb from the earth and keep it in the fridge until planting time, we will simulate a sudden temperature variation (which happens between the seasons in regions that have well-defined seasons) and that this can stimulate new flowers.

However, the bulb producer himself says that it can remain in the ground and should be irrigated once a week in the first 5 months and after that period, do not irrigate it anymore so that the bulb goes into dormancy and returns to bloom in the spring.

LIGHT

An essential condition in cultivation that will make the plant produce flowers is the incidence of the sun. Amaryllis is a plant that can be grown in full sun or half shade receiving at least 4 hours of sun a day. If you live in very hot regions, the ideal is to place the plant in a place that receives the sun in the morning, which is weaker and so the flowers, when open, will last longer.

Also avoid wetting the flowers and remove the pistil for greater durability of the flower, (besides that the pistil is toxic).

Plants that grow too tall, get too long, are getting too little light, and are stretching for more light.

PLANTING

To do the planting we need to use a substrate rich in organic matter and with excellent drainage because since the bulb stores water inside it, we cannot let the soil soak.

The vase does not need to be very deep because the plant does not have long roots and we can plant others together, which are not invasive.

I prefer heavier pots because when the flowering plant is heavy and the pot can tip over.

It is necessary to plant in vases with holes so that excess water from irrigation or rain drains easily. Making drainage layers is also very important to facilitate this process.

To plant we will bury most of the bulb leaving only the top part out of the ground. Leaving the bulb completely visible is more of an aesthetic issue to market the plant, for cultivation the ideal is to cover the bulb.

REGA

Watering should be done whenever you touch the soil and feel that it is dry, never leave the soil soaked because the bulb can rot.

Remembering that when there are no flowers or leaves, the bulb will be dormant and you can stop watering.

PESTS

The main problem you have with amaryllis is the caterpillars.

So to prevent or if you see any sign of a caterpillar you can use a biological control such as Dimypel or another insecticide for caterpillars such as Forth and

The varieties of amaryllis I planted are:

- Sydney

- Flamingo Peacock

- Star

- Blossom Bingo

- Lady

- Double King

It is recommended to plant up to 4 months after the bulb packaging date described on the label. Planting can be done at any time of the year and amaryllis bloom at least once a year.

I hope you enjoyed learning more about this beautiful plant. See you in the next video, until then!
