The genus Capsicum includes plants with spicy fruits, known as peppers, as well as plants with “sweet” fruits, peppers. The different known pepper species can be classified as domestic, semi-domesticated and wild. The domestic and most cultivated species are C. annuum var. annuum , C. baccatum var. pendulum , C. chinense , C. frutescens and C. pubescens . The peppers of this genus have no botanical relationship with other peppers commonly used as seasoning, such as black pepper ( Piper nigrum ), allspice ( Pimenta dioica or pink pepper (Schinus sp ).

Peppers are cultivated mainly for food, medicinal, condiment and ornamental purposes. They have woody or semi-woody, branched, erect or curved stems, and lanceolate, green and shiny leaves, with well-marked veins. The size is variable, with some cultivars being dwarf and others can reach 1.5 meters in height. The flowers are mostly white, but some varieties have purplish flowers. The fruit is a berry of variable size, which can be spherical, conical, campanulate, among others, and present in different colors, such as green, white, yellow, red, orange, black, brown or violet.

Capsaicin and other compounds in the capsaicinoid group are responsible for the spicy taste of chili peppers. This spiciness is measured on its own scale, the Scoville scale, which starts with peppers as having 0 spiciness and increases in units until reaching the hottest peppers, with 300,000 units, known as habaneros . In cooking, peppers are used in preserves, sauces, salads, stuffing, etc. and their use is so widespread that it is part of the most diverse eastern and western cultures.

Despite being considered perennial, current pepper varieties are selected to bear fruit intensely in a short period of time. In this way, after the first year, they lose their beauty, weaken, produce less and become sensitive to pests and diseases. The pots and flowerbeds must be reformed every one or two years and, for ornamental pepper plants to last longer, thinning the flowers and permanently harvesting the ripe fruits are recommended.

It should be grown in full sun or partial shade, in fertile, deep, light soil , enriched with organic matter and irrigated regularly. The pepper plant appreciates weekly fertilization during growth and flowering and biweekly fertilization during fruiting. Does not tolerate drought , waterlogging, cold or frost. It is multiplied by cuttings and more commonly by seeds. Harvesting begins 100 to 120 days after planting.
